Hi,

My backup exec 8.6 shows the tapedrive in offline status. The backups were working perfectly for the last few months. Suddenly now the tape doesnt eject and the scheduled job remains on loading tape status for hours. The lights on the drive are illuminated so it not a power supply issue. I have rebooted the server once and also restarted Backup exec services.

The situation hasnt changed.( The device properties for enabling device and ejecting the tape are grayed out)

I'll appreciate if any one has a suggestion to overcome this problem.

Thanks,

Jerry

Is your device a tape library (autoloader) or a single tape drive?

If it's a library, is there a screen on the front of the library that allows inputs? I have a DELL 136T and I can use the screen on the library itself to put it online or offline. You may want to check that.

If you have a single tape device, check the manual to see if it can be put on or offline by itself. for example, by going to Start>Programs and finding the tape device and selecting online or offline.

Its a single tape device and somehow I am unable to find the location for the online and offline settings you suggested. Please let me know if what you are refering to is in the control panel or its sopmething I should access through Backup Exec.

Thanks,

Jerry

I don't use single tape devices, mine are libraries.

You will have to find a manual for your tape device and see if it can be turned online via commands.

BE can turn it on and offline, go to the DEVICES tab and right click on the device. I believe there is an option to turn it on or offline.

Hi,

The problem is fixed it was simple tape loading issue. The tape wasn't seated properly and Backup Exec threw the device offline. I rebooted the server and before it loaded the OS i was able to eject the tape. Some reason Backup Exec was preventing the tape from being ejected and showed the device on "offline" status, so there was nothing I could do through Backup Exec.

The system is working perfectly now.

Thanks
