We've recently acquired a business who run a small Novell network. Coming from a Windows background I am a bit clueless when it comes to Novell Netware and having visited the premises only once I only have very limited information -I didn't want to start playing with a live server!

The server itself is acting as a file server for a DOS based database. It's left on constantly and is always showing what looks like a DOS looking screen with ArcServe information on it which is the backup program. All I know is the staff feed in a DDS-1 tape into the internal backup drive and leave it overnight and when they come back in, it is done.

For my next visit I need to determine what version of netware it's running and also the version of Arcserve. I figure if I can work that out, I can get a book on it and do some proper research as I ideally want to install things like a CD-Rewriter and get data off the server.

How do I come out of this Arcserve screen and go about finding out the Netware version?

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

Ctrl + Esc will get you to the available screens.

Select the System Console or one of the Arcserve screens for the Arcserve info.

Type version at the System Console prompt.

As far as Arcserve, one of the Arcserve screens (depending on the version) will have a menu and version information should be one of the options.

Thanks Lou!

That's exactly what I need for the time being.

On that note, is there a recommended book that will cover the likes of administering a Netware 3 or 4 server/network and also Arcserve? That would be very handy :-)

Thanks

Dan

OK, another question. Assuming it is Netware 3 or 4, how would I find out what sort of Dat tape drive they are using (nothing notable on the drive itself)? I would guess I'm looking for a Windows Control Panel/Device Manager equivalent.

Thanks

Dan

Maybe someone else out there can guide you to books on either subject.

You can determine the tape drive Manufacturer, type, and other info from one of the Arcserve screens. There is the Arcserve Message, Arcserve Scheduler and the 3rd screen. I can't think of the name right now but it's something like Arcserve Tape Engine. Access that one and look through the menu.

Thanks once again Lou.

At the moment it displays the Arcserve screen which gives details of the success/failure of the last backup. I think it's the "Runtime Message Screen". If I get someone to remotely press CTRL + ESC and navigate the menus for my information gathering as detailed earlier, how easy is it then to get back to the Runtime Message Screen -will that be apparent as I'm working my way through the Arcserve menus? I just want to end up in the same place I started so as not to confuse the staff over there!

Many thanks

Dan

When the backup end the results are shown on the Arcserve Message screen. You will be able to pick that screen from the available screens lust.

Lou

Thanks once again Lou, I should have enough now to to find the information I need.

Many thanks

Dan
