Hi, I have a vfp6.0 application running on a w2k server.
I have a report that goes to a DM printer attached to a w98 workstation and uses the generic text driver. This report will work from any w98 wksta. but from the w2k server I get the "Detail band too large to fit page" error. I have reinstalled the generic txt driver on the w2k and I have hacked the reports frx. Thanks for any ideas in advance.

Unfortunately not all printer drivers are made equal. Obviouly you W2K version is interpreting things differently. You may have to adjust you report slightly.

Mallee,
I encountered the same problem in my application. One system printed fine but when done on another with a diferent OS I received the same error. The two drivers, although for the same printer, had margin differences due to the OS build.

This also cropped up with printing to two different type printers, All of our development testing was done on laser printers but when a user printed to a inkjet we discovered that the report dropped a line on each page.

I would suggest testing your reports on as many configurations as you can as a required QC step. It may raise your QC costs but it will save you time and confusion in the Support area.

HI malee,
1. The way I make it easier is to always think of only a 7.25" paper width for my reports. Any extra amount of data is managed using font sizes or by using layout suitably stretching the detail line.
2. I make a standard letter head type block with the company name, address, logo .. all these with parameters to turn it on or off, based on requirements. This block is made to 7.25 or 7.3" and all the reports carry this in the header block and then the reports are right & left alligned to match this header band.
This helps to take care of all printers paper widths (since less than 7.3" printable area of paper width is very rare).

You can adopt some such strategy and it is sure going to be quick work.. if you open up all the reports in your project.. set the font size a little lower .. adjust the box sizes a little lower.. and move the fields towards left so that you end up with lesser width for total report.
Remember to use common pitch/font size so that you dont get side effects of using a dot matrix printer.

Hope this idea helps you :) ramani :)

that is why they made different drivers for different OS's...
