Hi, Recently I purchased a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate, and attempted to boot the OS from startup. I inserted the DVD into the DVD drive of my desktop, but after entering the boot utility, I found that there was no option to boot from my DVD drive. I wen't into my Bios to try and look for a solution to my problem, but I was unable to find anything that could help. I would like to be able to do this without an external drive since I do not own one.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Since I don't have a Digital camera handy, I'l type what it read:

-------
Controller Details:
*Controller = Parallel ATA
*Port = PATA-1 (PRI IDE Slave)

Drive Details:
*Drive ID = Philips DVD +/- RW DVD 8701
-------

Hope this helps.

Can anyone help with this issue?

Do you have both a CD and DVD drive in your system? It
might help if it saw the DVD drive before the CD drive.
(C: = hdd, D: = DVD drive, E: = CD drive)
The BIOS should identify it as a DVD drive.
All XP disks I have seen are CD's.

Just a thought from the past

Knowing what additional devices are installed as wunkunn asked would be helpful. And if you didn't build your system yourself, knowing the manufacturer and model may help too.

In BIOS there should be a Boot Order or similarly named section. What devices are listed there?

And in an earlier post you mentioned pressing pressing F12 to enter the Boot Device Menu. What devices are listed there?

Sorry about the late post, I've been busy all day.

I found my Digital camera and took pictures of my BIOS and my boot menu. Since I used some free software, the pictures contain watermarks, sorry.
Here are the pictures:

My boot menu, The selected text reads System setup and takes you to the BIOS:
This is my system information:
These are my DVD drive details:
This image contains an overview of my BIOS including my boot sequence settings (larger file):

And in responce to Wunkunn's post:
I have both a CD and a DVD drive in my system, but the DVD is not listed under my boot sequence.

Is PATA-0 your CD-ROM drive? If so, I would try swapping the CD-ROM and DVD drives around so that the DVD is seen first. Depending on the jumpering on the drives, you can swap drive positions on the cable (if Cable Select is used) or jumper the DVD drive for Master and the CD-ROM as Slave. This should help with wunkunn's suggestion.

I have very little experiance with building computers, and therefor would not geel very comfortable changing the cables on my computer. Is there anyway to do this without taking my computer apart?

Also My PATA-0 is my CD drive.

Unfortunately there is no way to swap IDE Master/Slave assignments without opening the case and either mvong their positions on the cable or setting the jumpers on the drive themselves. Is there anyone you trust doing this type of change?

A different approach would be to ensure the Vista DVD itself is indeed bootable. Do you have access to another system to try to boot from the DVD? Is your Windows Vista Ultimate the full version or an upgrade? As I said earlier, the Vista Business Upgrade DVD I have is not bootable; it will only run from within the XP environment.

I have tested this on another computer, but I do not wish to use my only licence on that computer. It is indeed bootable.

I guess i will have to get a freind of mine to have a look at my computer, or maybe he can teach me how to do it.

Thank you for you help and advice, hopefully it will prove helpfull, It may be some time before I can swap the drives, but I will Post my progress as soon as i can.

Once again, Thank you

I tried this the other day and it worked perfectly. Once again, I would like to thank everyone that helped in this thread.

I have same issue that won't allow me to boot from DVD but only CD like Ndrd described.

Ndrd, glad to know that you solved the problem. Could you post your solution guide in detail to help me? Thanks.
