I just got done scrubbing my hard drive an am in the proscess of re-installing programs onto my Windows 98 system. As soon as I installed my Office 2000, an old "friend" was back!! An icon on my Desktop named simply ~. When I try to open it I get the "Open with" box. The first iten in the list is a generic icon without any name. If I open that I get a display of my entire C drice. I'm not even sure if there is a relationship between the "open with" program and the unwanted icon. Deleating the Icon and erasing it from my recycle bin will get rid of it for awhile but sooner or later it reappears and I can't even guess from where.

Can someone give me a clue as to what this is and where it comes from? Thanks Hank

After installing an OE update, you may discover a file named just "~" on your desktop or some other location on your hard drive. This is an automatic backup copy of the Windows Address Book (WAB) used by OE. The file has always been created automatically by OE and saved in the same folder as the *.wab file itself, with a name like <username>.wa~. A bug in an update causes the copy to be made in the wrong location and with a truncated name. You can simply rename it to *.wab and then double-click it to see that it is indeed a copy of your address book. The OE team at MS is aware of this bug and hope to include the fix in a future update.
