Right-click a blank area of the desktop, Arrange Icons by, click Show Desktop icons.

Check to see that Shell reads only: explorer.exe
in the below registry value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows

Ran the registry and explorer.exe is correct.I failed to mention that not only icons disappear but also start button and task bar disappear, right click does not work on desktop.Online scans come up negative.

1. Do a start, run, sfc /Scannow

2. Some registry and other fixes:

Restore the Taskbar to Default Functionality (Line 164)

Taskbar Is Missing When You Log On to Windows

Restore lnk association: (Line 12) Link File Fix for Windows XP

Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar (Line 195)

Hide All or Show All Desktop Icons (Line 172)

Two things to consider if all else fails.
