I have a clients computer that I was cleaning using CleanUp! and when it asked me to reboot I lost the desktop. There is no icons, taskbar and Task Manger doesn't work. I tried to go into safe mode and nothing. I get the mouse pointer and I can move mouse but there is nothing to click even right click doesnt work. Tried last good known configuration and nothing. I used ERD to see about using system restore and this is where it gets funnier the last system restore is April of 1978!!! Checked the cmos time & date hoping that was the problem but no the date and time are correct. So please help!!!

Put your system disc in and load into recovery mode. Type sfc/scannow , then run chkdsk . Then restart see if this helps. Sounds like this cleanup program cleaned up some neccesary system files as well.

Unless I am doing it wrong but sfc /scannow doesnt work in the recovery console.

well im not sure if it works or not but its not sfc /scannow its sfc/scannow . But it still might not work. I was just trying some suggestions.

Dont get me wrong I appreciate your help and I wish it would've worked but no dice I tried it both ways with a space and without space. And once again I really appreciate your suggestions.

n/p, i do not know a whole lot about recovery mode but I though id give it a shot. Await for more comments as im sure someone will have some suggestions. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

IRC can also used to issue commands to compromised 'zombie' or 'botnet' PC's after malware infection.

I suggest checking it by either downloading, burning and using a bootable recovery CD which includes anti-virus programs or by removing the hard disk and attaching it as a slave to another PC to carry out a full malware scan just in case.

Hope this helps...
