Designing a purchasing website

Guys

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but is there anywhere where I can get info/guides on how to design a purchasing website?

By this, I mean that I will want customers to visit my website and be able to select products to purchase. I guess I will need a product database (how do I do this?) that is selectable from a webpage?

Any host can probably give you info on this. I presume you will need some sort of shopping cart system. They are not exactly standard, you will need to purchase a suitable account which has this.
As I said try any web hosts and check their offers.
