I am trying to deploy Windows XP SP2 to a number of workstations. I am trying to do this with SUS, Software update service. I downloaded and installed the server portion of SUS, and synchronised. WHen trying to install the client side, i got an error: WIndows XP SP2 is needed to install. Ehmmmm, excuse me mr. Gates but how can i deploy SP2 when the client NEEDS SP2?

Anyways, without the client, nothing is happening. I approved the SP2 package for distribution, but the workstations do not update.

Anybody got any suggestions for me?

Hmm, I am pretty sure there is a small executable you need to deploy first in order to update the update software (if you see what I mean <g>). Do a search for auto deployment of SP2 and I think you will find it. Or you could use WUS instead of SUS. Its in beta right now but works (I'm told).

acoording to MS on their website, computers with XP SP1 already have the needed components.
I also set a GPO enforcing windows update and setting the IP of the update server to the local SUS server.

I will look into WUS, thanks for the tip.

If anyone has more suggestions, they are still very welcome.

I found the cause. Turns out computers MUST be in the MyBusiness/SBScomputers OU for SUS to work. I had put the workstations in a different OU for convenience. I put them back in the SBSComputers OU and the workstations immediately began to update.
MS doesn't mention this condition anywhere except in a downloadable whitepaper on SUS which you don't even notice is there until you look. Even an interactive testdrive demo for SUS doesn't mention this.
Cost me 12 hours work though to find the cause.
