I bought Delphi 2005 Professional shortly after it became available in the UK. It seemed to be a bit unstable. A few weeks afterwards my hard disk completely crashed and when I replaced the hard disk I only installed Delphi 7.

I would now like to use Delphi 2005 Professional - it cost me several hundred pounds, after all. Can someone tell me if adding Service Packs makes it stable and if so what Service Packs do I need to install?

I do mean Delphi 2005 and not Delphi 2006.

D2005's stability was indeed horrible on its release.

you need at least update 3 and a bunch of hotfixes (look here : I advise disabling toghether support for best stability. I started with delphi1 and used every release ever since. I must say that D2005 was the most unstable on it's initial release.however after a lot of frustration/anger/unbelief and a lot of updates, this version became the best since V1. Now I am awaiting my copy of D2006, the saga continues...

Thanks, I'll give it a go on my test machine within the next week. The blogs link looks useful - worth a star!

I forgot to mention :

from D2006, borland decided to ditch their own memory manager in favor for Pierre Le Riche's FASTMM4 memory manager. I replaced mine on D2005 and I must say I am very please with it. look here :

It comes with full source, this means you can recompile it for all delphi versions :) (the ones that have borlndMM.dll)

Cheers,

Daddy

Guys:

Have you D2005 up and running stable? Can you comment on it behavior and resume what patches have you applied?

What about Win32 component compatibility issues? (I have a lot of own made D6 components I will need to keep if I upgrade).

TIA.

Progress has been slow - a busy schedule rather than problems with the installation.

I've installed D2005 on my test machine but not started applying the updates.

buho, D6 components pose no problems.
D2005 really needs update 3 (and together support ditched) or else the new IDE experience will be a nightmare...

I'm kinda overwhelmed with the truckload of unofficial patches I'll probably need to add... or at least that is the feeling I've got from the abauer blog you linked in your first post.

Thanks a lot, Daddy.

Star for you.
