Deleting is slow in Win2K

Strange behavior: If I try to delete anything on my Win2K Pro computer, it takes forever. Files, folders, shortcuts, IE favorites, anything - except if I delete files or folders off of mapped drives (mapped to a Novell server). Deleting on the mapped drives goes fast, but anything on my machine is very slow.

I've tried defragging the disk and turning off Norton auto-protect - all to no avail.

Any ideas?

1.Try to uninstall and install again a SP2.
2.Add more space for the registry!
3. Check the RAM availability.
4. Check a spooled and stucked Print Jobs.
5. Check a VRAM availability and amount.
6. Check a HardDisk space.
7. try to log on locally , not in domain and vice versa.
8. check a disk compression statuss.
9. check runned local processes and threads (TaskManager)

I experience very slow deletions when my Recycle Bin contains a very large number of files. Emptying the Recycle Bin fixes it.

I am unaware of how to "turn off" N auto-protect [ completely, ].

If I were you I would uninstall Norton with the exception of the A Virus, or uninstall it also if you can unplug from the server net or the Norvell is "safe". Then get this issue solved without it. You can then reinstall the Norton items you NEED when you are done.

I would GUESS you are running W2K P on an NTFS formatted partition ...

Can you post more about your system?

1) MHz?
2) Updates? ( SP1, SP2 )
3) Harddrive type?
4) How many hard drives are you running on that computer, and partitions per HD?
5) What is the FAT status on each partition if more than one?

For a quick check of your system capabilities, try creating a BIN (folder) on the C: drive called WASTE and move all the things you want to delete there for the time being. This way you are "moving things" and not trying to mark them for deletion [or delete them) right NOW. I say this in case you have something running that is trying to be SAFE and do a multi-write-over deleting feature. Like CleanSweep!

Badger7, thank you for your help. As you requested, here is more about my system:

1) MHz = Pentium III 1000
2) Updates = Win2K SP2
3) Harddrive type = not SCSI (40 Gig)
4) Only 1 Harddrive, 1 Partition. Used to be two partitions but I used PartitionMagic to change the 2 Gig Fat partition and the 38 gig NTFS to one giant NTFS partition

I did the copy test you suggested. For a 220 K file, working from the desktop to a folder on my computer, Copy or Move was fast (1 second) but delete is still slow (10 seconds). Sometimes a delete takes 30 seconds or more.

To shut off Norton completely perform a ctrl alt del and look for vtray or something of that nature. Depends on editon and version.

OK ... I believe it might be the NTFS filing system recalibrating itself with every delete.

If you like playing around try this now ... create another partition from the 40 G to about a 4 G as your second partition, and make it FAT32. Then try a deletion time check from that partition.

Another quick check is to place a LARGE amount in the BIN you created, and see if there is any speed gained or if the time is progressive. Such as 100 Meg taking 45 seconds [where if the math were done on the 220 k to 100,000 k difference it would take, at that rate, 227 minutes!]

Does this make sense?

NTFS rewrites the FAT everytime you do anything system wise, and in W2K Pro the disk is scanned for ALL "maked for deletion" files to be thorough.

A progression pop-up should appear when you do the 100,000 K deletion, with the little trash thrower that is always NEAT to watch. LMAO!

I will throw away 100 Meg and tell you what it takes on a 900 Mhz ... BRB ...

104 Meg 34 seconds to copy drive to same drive! 1 second or less to Recycle Bin
5 seconds to remove completely

[[I USE Fat 32 religiously!] So this is just a go by, ok!]

I am SURE EX-Recovery could salvage it on the drive but that is not warranted here. I would have to investigate NTFS structure, but I am sure on an NTFS formatted drive EZ-Recovery CANNOT recover from that!

TFS, the native file-system format for Windows 2000, has continuously evolved since its release with Windows NT 3.1. Although NTFS's original features made it suitable as a high-end file-system format, the extensive and significant enhancements that Microsoft added for Win2K address enterprise-level requirements that Microsoft identified as more organizations adopted NT. One feature, consolidated security information, improves the efficiency of NTFS in everyday operation; others, such as quota management, must be leveraged by applications or enabled and managed by an administrator.

In this two-part series, I take you inside the NTFS features introduced by NTFS 5.0 (NTFS5), the version of NTFS included with Win2K. I don't describe administrative interfaces to the features or list programming APIs that let you access them; instead, I discuss how NTFS implements the features behaviorally and in its on-disk format. The features I cover in this column include consolidated security information, reparse points (including mount points and junctions), and quota management. In Part 2, I will conclude with a look at sparse-file support, the change journal, link tracking, and encryption.

Summary: FAT, FAT32, and NTFS File Systems Under DOS and Windows 3.x, disk drives (or partitions) commonly used the FAT (file allocation table) system for storing disk files. I had to look up LMAO, and although my posterior is still attached I agree that looking at the little trash thrower is no fun at all.

Thanks to your help I have found a work-around to the problem that satisfies me, and since I have lots of other mysteries to figure out I'm not going to dig into this any further. Basically, whenever I need to delete a file or folder on a local drive, I'm going to MOVE it to a temp drive that I keep on the network file server, and delete it from there. It's much faster.
