Deleting From SQL CLI.

I know that this is going to sound pathetic, but i cannot DELETE info via an sql line.

I am trying to use

DELETE * FROM tbl WHERE ID = 'barney'

but it is not working.

Can anyone put me out of my misery.....PLEASE?????
