Deleting Files on Client

Hi guys,

Have a slight problem, and i was wondering if you could help. have a windows server 2003 network operating, and everything works fine. The only problem is when a user logs of, all their data/settings are uploaded to the server (as wanted) but copies of this are also left on the client, which i don't want as more than 1 user uses the clients and i don't want it bogged down with client documents. Anyway to sort it so that, user documents etc. aren't kept on the client?

You are using "Roaming Profiles?"
Look into Group Policy - there is a setting for clients that removes the profile when the user logs off.

In Group Policy, this can be accomplished.

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates ->
System -> User Profiles

Enable GPO: Delete Cached Copies Of Roaming Profiles

This works quite well, but there's a caveat. You should disable (or not configure) GPO: Do Not Detect Slow Network Connection. Reason being is that if a slow network detection is detected the system will try to grab the locally cached profile, but it will not be there. Hence, the user will not be able to logon with their profile.

Disk is cheap. Modern desktops are overpowered. Doing what you suggest adds complexity and overhead for little to no gain.

If you want the data off the box for legal or security reasons, I can understand that--but doing so simply because you don't want the machine "bogged down" by additional profiles seems silly to me.

I think performance is a big issue too. If you delete the user profile locally then your users will have a much greater time to login. Be prepared for some really angry users.
