Does anyone know where I might find the local Windows Update repository on a WinXP SP1 machine? Most of our machines here are set to download the update but wait for the user to install, but I'm trying to remove the downloaded SP2 package before any of our users with local admin rights get prompted to install it.

Are you just asking how to turn off automatic updates?

I could've sworn there was an easier way, but i guess not for SP1....you can go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > turn it off from there.

If for some reason you still need to find where it saved the sp2 file, i would suggest searching the hard drive for any files bigger than like 200MB, i think sp2 is around 266MB but i'm not sure.

Backup before you delete anything in case you have a change of mind. SP2 will be split into very small files and will not be called SP2.

See this thread for the location of the files and note the comments about System Restore too.

Where is the XP-SP2 dowloaded file?
Thread779-909470

Even if you remove all trace, SP2 is now part of Windows Updates and will likely be re-offered for download along with other updates. There use to be a block on SP2 but I think that has just been removed.

Thanks Linney! We're actually migrating to an SUS server and have pulled SP2 from the list of approved updates. This is because MS has expired the group policy that blocks the install. All that's left to do is pull any packages that have already been downloaded prior and all should be well.
