Deleted Items Retention problem

Hi all -

I've been reading the articles on enabling Deleted Items Retention on Exchange Server (2000) as I recall I enabled this a couple of months ago but have not actually needed it since.

However, today I thought I'd have another poke around into how it works and.. today it doesn't

I went into my inbox and deleted an item, went to the deleted items folder and deleted it from there. I've tried this a few times today, but whenever I go into Tools/Recover Deleted Items I don't see any mails to recover. I've tried closing Outlook and restarting a few minutes later. I know that the server has been restarted since the settings were made. I looked at the server settings and they look Ok.

I don't know what else to check!

Can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction and give me a few pointers what else I should test or look into?

Hmm.. this seems interesting:

If I use a web browser to go to "

http://server/:exchange:/username/:Inbox/?cmd=showdeleted"

then it displays the emails that I expected to be visible from "Recover Deleted Items".

Why wouldn't these be visible in Outlook? Some sort of caching? Is there something I need to press to synchronise Outlook (2003) with the Exchange (2000) mailbox deleted items?
