An active directory user was deleted but their old mailbox hasn't been deleted. I created a new account in active directory but that didn't solve their accessing their Exchange mailbox. Now there are 2 mailboxes in Exchange with their name. One of course has a lot of emails in it that we would like the "new user" to be able to access again. How best can i go about this.

It doesn't look like any data is gone. It seems if i could find a way to give someone access to a mailbox then i could give this person access to their old mailbox.

Is my problem that there are 2 users with the same mailbox name and the system is confused?

I would delete the newly created mailbox by running exchange tasks on the user account. From exchange system manager I would right-click on the old mailbox, choose reconnect, and use the "Select User" box to attach it to the new user.

Jesse is correct. And after you reconnect the mailbox, you should right click the second one and choose to purge it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
