I've been asked to delete an email off the exchange server itself, so that it never gets backed up, etc.

I know you can delete it from the inbox, deleted items, sent items, etc and then it will stick around for whatever the server retention policy is for deleted items.

What I'm looking for is a utility that will find messages in a user's message store (inbox, etc) and delete them NOW, so that I don't have to deal with "is it still on the backup" type issues.

I know, it's a dangerous utility to use by mistake. But that's the question I've been asked and I figured this was the best place to find an answer.

Thanks in advance!

There are a couple of ways to handle this.

One: You can turn of deleted item retention on the mail store. This will impact all users.

Two: Through Outlook (logged in as the client), click on the Deleted Items folder. Open the Tools menu and choose "Recover deleted items". On the recovery window, there should be a purge button to permanently delete the email.
