delete from text file

I have a text file that looks like this:

test1
test2
test3
test4


and so on. How would I handle the situation if I had to delete "test3" from the text file. I really don't want to read this file and write to another one. Any ideas?

That's probably your best option. What reasons do you have for not wanting to do this?
