I purchase a Buffalo 160 GB external USB drive from Fry’s for $89.00 after rebates and have been struggling for 5 days with Delayed Write Failed errors and lockups when writing very large files (50 mbs or more). I tried everything I could find on message boards and the internet and nothing worked. I noticed that my Dell Dimension had a USB 1.0 interface so as a last resort before returning the drive, I installed a new USB 2.0 card. Problem solved. I just did a trouble-free 5.4 GB backup in 30 minutes where before I never got close before the dreaded Delayed Write error. Hope this may help someone else.

and, by the way, this is true for CD- and DVD-writers, too.

USB 2.0 -devices really work best with USB 2.0 interfaces ;-)

Got the same trouble with a WiFi-stick. ASUS said: should work on USB 1 with reduced speed; but no connection at all. With the USB 2-card the stick got a marvelous new life :)
