Currently we have a mixed Windows network. Our clients are 98, 2000 and XP. All our servers are 2000 with 1 2003 server.

Whenever an XP or 2000 machine logs on to the network, we experience a delay of approx. 5 mins before the computer actually logs on. Microsoft has an article on knowledge base that recommends deleting all the user profiles that exist on the machine, which may increase log on time. This does not work.

We have AD running only 1 Group Policy.

We have 2 global catalog servers at this location and 4 DCs.

We have scanned both clients and servers for viruses, and found none.

Any suggestions to what is causing the delay and a way to fix it would be great.

Do you have "Roaming Profiles' enabled?
If so, you may wish to check the size of the profiles. On occasion, depending on where and how the user saves files, the profile can grow quite large (files may actually be being saved in the profile, itself). In a case like this, deleting the profile would accomplish nothing as the "Roaming Profile" would be copied down again at next login.

We do not have roaming profiles enabled. There are only 4 profiles, which are roaming in the network, which are basically administrators, which use DFS.

There are approxamately 600 other uses, but not every user logs on to every machine.

When a user logs on, his/her profile is copied to the local machine.

However, up until this last week, the log on time for an XP/2000 machine was approx 4-10 seconds. Now it is taking 2-4 minutes, which says to me we are dealing with a greater problem.

Thoughts?

The system might be taking a long time to verify connection of mapped network drives. Windows has a timeout of about 2 min, if I remember correctly to reconnect the network drives. Ensure the drive mappings are correct.
