in windows 98, something keeps writing to the drive during the hd defrag process. there is nothing shown to be running in the task manager brought up by ctrl-alt-delete. is there any way to tell what it is?

If you have Norton Anti Virus running, that might cause a problem. Also if when you power on the machine, repeatedly tap the F8 key and start the pc in the Safe Mode and then try your defragmentation.

Cougar's suggestion is the best way to go to be sure it'll complete. To get it to work in Normal mode however, make sure only explorer (optionally systray) are running in task manager. I'll bet your screen saver was set as well - disable it.
