defragment won't finish

my disk defragment won't finish. it starts going, gets a little bit defragged, and quits. i analyge the drive, and it tells me i need to defrag.

Have you got things running in the systray? Certian programs can cause defrag to keep restarting so you best bet is to close as many services/ Programs as possible

how much free space is on the volume you are defregging?

If there isn't enough free space, it'll do that. Microsoft suggests that you leave about a third of the drive free for fast defragging. If there is less than about 15% free, it's gonna start hanging in defrag. Hope I was of some help...

When I defrag my laptop, I always have to remember to disengage my McAffees virus protection and turn off my screen saver. I really think the screen saver was causing my defrag to stop.

As stated above, you definitely need to make sure that the system tray is almost completely empty, including shutting down all anti-virus software. If it's been a while since you've defragged, or if you've never defragged, it will take a while anyways. You should also run a thorough scan disk before defragging (most times I've tried defragging without scan disk, the program won't let you defrag). Last resort - run defrag from safe mode. hope this helps!

the drive was 25% free, but every time it defragged, it got a little better. i kept doing that and it finally cleared up. it has been awhile since i defragged. also, i did have the systray cleared except for the volume controls.
