Do I have to Defrag the data drive or does Exchange defrag it's own mail stores?

Diskeeper is the best isn't it?

I have never defraged a drive with Exchange.

Online defrag is automatic. If you have a 1221 stating lots of free space in the database then I would do an offline defrag. If not just "pet" the server and watch it work. And do some backups! Dan

When I analyse the disk though, its says I should do a defrag, should I just ingnore it?

In theory, you can stop the Exchange services and run the defrag then restart the services.

In practice, I'd leave it well alone!!!

Surely if the disk if 45% fragmented, one should defrag on a regular basis?

Does anyone regularly defrag there win2k servers here??

Also, our data volume is compressed, would that make a performance problem with exchange??

If it ain't broke don't fix it :) Dan
