I am looking for a robust (and trustworthy) product to defragment a windows NT server (4.0, sp6a) with a 500 GB drive.
Diskkeeper can not handle this large a drive.
Thanks for the help!
You might want to have a look at O&O Defrag V4 Server Edition. You can download a trial version at ftp://ftp.oo-software.de/pub/oodefragv4/oodefragv4server_english_2000xp.zip
Haven't tried it with a 500 Gig drive but never crashed on the servers we're running.
Personally, I dont rate these products much... I' assume that based on the 500Gb volume size, you are using some form of Hardware RAID controller, and as such the volume is divided across multiple disks...
How will the software know where or how the data is arranged across multiple physical disks ?...
A more tried and tested, and argueably safer way to achieve this would be to backup and restore the data.
500Gb is a lot of data, depending on the type of files you are backing up (lots of small files or much bigger files) this will take a while.
Also just out of curiosity... Have you ever ran into issues with "chkdsk" on these volumes... I had a customer who used large volumes on an MS cluster, which crashed, marking the volumes dirty, it took 3 days to complete the chkdsk !
This is our main file server, plus also active in our production environment, so it can't be taken offline for the time it would take to restore or for a reboot/chkdsk.
Has about 450 GB of data. I know, it's not a pretty situation, but it was here when I started (three months ago). I'm just trying to make it better
I've downloaded the O&O - so I'll give that a try.
