Another fine question.

When adding new stations in our Definity switch, we've got a large problem. The third page of the station's information has a few fields, the one I'm talking about in particular is the "Building" field.

On our campus, we've got about 75 buildings, and the building field is like a drop down list, not something you can just put whatever number you want in.

The definity only lets us have 60 buildings in there I think. Is there any way to add more? Any solutions?

What version are you on?

I'm on v10 and it has 5 columns of 15 which is 75! Just what you need!

Most switches I've seen don't ever use this info.

Hope this helps,

Ronster

Maybe it is 75, but there's no way to add more buildings? We have many more that are being built...

I pretty sure you can't add more.

Do you use all the floor fields? You could maybe use the spare floor fields to give you more scope.
e.g. Building: Physics Floor: West5

If you're not using the "Room" field, use that for your building information. It's a free-form field that you can put anything into.

We use both the floor and the room field for our campus.

Some buildings are single story, however, most have floors.

We use the room field as well for the room number...

As of right now, we're starting to put RoomNum/BldgNum in our room field (ie 207/13) for room 207 in building 13. I can't believe they'd limit you to 75...

Maybe I'll have to call Avaya.

What about the Jack and Cable fields? Are you using those, as well?

I thought MY system was large.......

Yes... our system is getting up there. We have a type R. We're going to have to upgrade our processor and what not soon to accomodate more cabinets.

Anyhow.

Yes, we just the jack field and the cable field. Jack for jack number and cable for the pair number coming out of the frame.

There HAS to be a way to fix this.

75 fields is just not enough. Especially for campuses that have 25,000 extensions!

With a system that big it sounds like you need to build a database and assign someone to keep it maintained.

Well, we could...

But why have two systems if you don't have to.

We'd like to keep it all centralized.

I guess worse case scenario, we could have two systems... but that involves making sure you check TWO databases, and keeping them current...

Our system isn't that big yet, we've got about 3000 extensions I think... but each year we grow by a few hundred.

As Ronster said, you could use the Floor field for 75 more. You could then use the "Cord Length" (0-99) for the floor. Do you have more than 99 floors in any buildings? :)

Or what about including the building name in the extension Name. Would it not be useful for people to see this in the directory too? e.g. Bloggs, Joe B76

Then if there are two Joe Bloggs it would help to see what one you want to call.
