This may seem a really stupid question, but how do I stop documents having the default styles of "Heading 1" "Heading 2" "Heading 3". I never use them and its annoying to have them there :) Is there a way to remove them without annihilating word? Thanks for any help on this random question

Dean.

If you don't want any of the default formats you can just remove the button from the tool bar.

View-Toolbars-Customize.
Select the command tab
Click Rearrange commands
Select toolbar b radio button then selct formating toolbar
Delete styles and formating button.

Altenatively select

Format-Styles and formating and you can add, remove or modify individual styles in there.

Sorry, I think I explained it badly :( I was half asleep. But you did try! :)

I liked using the styles and formatting, but just didn't like it showing the default ones. I managed to sort it out, but thanks anyway!

Hi MagicalDean,

I personally know how to do this, but it may help others if you post a solution to a question you have posted here. If you figured it out yourself...great! However, it would also be great if you posted what you came up with. Who knows? You may have come up with something better! It is good to share. Could you post what you DID come up with?

Thanks.

Will do :)

Basically I was being pedantic and didn't want it to show the styles I didn't use, ie "Heading 1", "Heading 2" and "Heading 3". To do it:

Format -> Styles and Formatting

Click the "Custom..." thing that is in the bottom of the window, to the right of "Show:" and then click it again in the little dropdown menu that dropsup for me

In the window that appears untick the ones you don't want to appear. I also turned off the "Show Clear Formatting" because I never used it. I am now left with just the "Normal" style which is the only one I really use as I then define my own

Hope this helps anyone stuck on how to do it!

Twitchy mouse button.

1. Show Clear Formatting is handy if you get into serious use of styles.

2. Forget about normal.dot. Start using your own Styles from your own template (.DOT) files.

3. Use the style organizer to move, transfer and delete styules from any file you want.
