twice in the last two weeks, I've had the default route disappear on my system. It happened once on Sunday at 4pm and again on Monday at 4am (a week later)...

Doesn't seem to be tied to any cron jobs. Its a weekend, so there shouldn't be much activity on the system.

There also aren't any logs showing that the network interfaces restarted; they're up when I get to the system... Just missing the default route.

I've never had it happen before, but could the default route drop if my ISP dropped the connection? I'm stumped here...

I would think that the default route would be dropped if your ISP drops the connection. It certainly does on my machine. What distro are you running? Bruce Garlock

Red Hat 7.

Do you have a static IP though? With DHCP, I would expect default gw to drop. I just can't remember ever losing the gw before with a static.

I should have mentioned that in my post.

I have a dynamic IP. Yes, that is strange that it is losing that gateway. What does /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/sysconfig/static-routes look like?

Also, is this RH 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2? Is it up2date with all patches? Bruce Garlock

sysconfig/network has the gateway in there. sysconfig/static-routes doesn't exist.

It started as 7.0, and is fully up to date.

Having the entry in /etc/sysconfig/network should be sufficient. I have an internal RH 7.2 machine that has a GW setup for my RH box that acts as a router/firewall, and it has never lost the default route. Maybe you might want to post a bug on
PS: You may want to try and add it to /etc/sysconfig/static-routes (create the file if it is not there)

the syntax is like this:

eth0 net 192.168.206.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 'static-ip' Bruce Garlock
bruceg@tiac.net

I was also thinking that maybe this could be a hardware problem (I don't think RH or Linux is known for dropping routes like this). Have you tried another NIC? Bruce Garlock
bruceg@tiac.net

Haven't tried that, and it would be a real pain to get a replacement. NIC has been good for a while, though...

And if the NIC were bad, then wouldn't the interface go down as well as the default route? Doesn't seem like the problem.

I'm just trying to cover all the possibilities here. It's real strange that it would just drop the route. I've never seen that, and although I've only been admining UNIX/Linux for 4-5 years, one thing I have learned is that once it is setup, it works. Not like M$, where I would expect something like this.

I had to replace a NIC yesterday, that was wreaking all sorts of havoc with a firewall. Although the interface was up, there was no getting into the box. Once I restarted /etc/rc.d/init/network it would work for a few hours, then die. HW issues can make the OS do strange things, so for a few dollars, I would try a new NIC to see if that clears things up. Bruce Garlock

Yeah, well this is a dual interface NIC, so its not exactly just a few dollars. And it hasn't happened often enough that I could temporarilly plug in a single interface nic to test it...

No, I rarely hit redhat's support site... My experiences with it have been poor at best, and most of the problems I come across aren't specific to that distro... I get much better results from google or tek-tips.

I'll see about hitting it later today, if I get a chance, though.

I see this fairly frequently if routed or some other protocol gets rip updates that incorrectly have it change routes, but I've not seen it delete..
