I have multiple accounts in my Outlook XP. I have an IMAP account setup as my default, our dept exchange server and a hotmail account. My email address for the IMAP account is myusername@fcu.edu and out dept exchange server address is myusername@exchange.fcu.edu. When I send an email thought the IMAP server, recipients see my email address as myusername@exchange.fcu.edu. Why is it going thought the exchange server instead of the IMAP sever?

Just a side note, I have a lot of external email addresses in exchange as contact for mailing lists and the people I usually email are on the mailing lists. I don’t know if that makes any difference. Thanks for the help.

The IMAP server is your Exchange server (probably).
You may have multiple SMTP addresses assigned, and the wrong one is the default?

marc,
Thanks for the reply. IMAP is our university's main email server, and it’s an UNIX system. I only have one SMTP address in active directory and its myusername@exchange.fcu.edu like it’s suppose to be. I looked at the header of an email that I sent to someone, and it was sent from the exchange server but I used the IMAP to send it. I think outlook is doing some kind of lookup in the Global Address List when I send email but I’m not sure. Thanks again.

Check your profile, surely your outgoing (smtp) server is not pointing to that Unix box then, the IMAP one.

Marc,
I'm going through the SMTP of the UNIX for out going mail. I just noticed that it goes thought the UNIX server sometimes and the exchange something even tho i want it to go thought the UNIX server all the time. do you know how to clear the history. i mean when i type an email it pops up with the person's email that i'm trying to email? i think that might fix the problem.

Hmmm... could this help?

The AutoComplete feature in Outlook 2002 and 2003 is just as good at remembering incorrect addresses that you type in as it is at remembering correct addresses.

For an individual bad address that keeps popping up in the AutoComplete list, the solution is simple: Use the up and down arrow keys to select that address in the list, then press Delete to delete it from the AutoComplete data file.

If you have more than one name that's bad or the whole list seems to be corrupted, you can delete the .nk2 file in which Outlook stores the data. One .nk2 file exists in your Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder for each Outlook profile. After the .nk2 file is delete, Outlook will automatically create a new one.

The autocomplete has nothing to do with the Outlook history.
And there must be something wrong in your setup, it just does not switch SMTP on itself.
Do you have 2 accounts open in your profile with the IMAP?
IF so, remove the other account and test again.
Or you could even test with a new message, the do View - From Field and see if you can set it correctly there.

Outlook/exchagne was doing a name resolve and if the email address is in GAL it would send the email though the exchange server. I stopped the resovled function (thread858-747814) in exchange and that look care of this problem. Thanks again to everyone for helping me.
