I am using Access 2000, running Windows XP.

I e-mailed an Access database to a friend.

When it left here it was called "Feb 15.mdb" When it arrived at the other end it was called "Feb 15.90203DEFANGED-mdb"

Notice that not only was "90203DEFANGED" added to the file name, but also the period before the extension was changed to a dash.

I have never encountered this before. Anyone know why this happens?

Their firewall software changed it to disallow virus laden applications from starting automatically if someone double-clicked it. So .mdb's are in the protection list, as well as .exe, .bat, etc.

Some exchange servers just delete the whole file. For some reason they mostly believe Zip files are safe!

Thanks. I wondered if it had something to do with virus protection and firewalls.

If I understand you correctly, this happens at the receiver's end, not the sender's. Correct?

Also most .rar and .dat files get through ok

It's gotten to the point where we can barely recieve any emails at work even from clients

I hardly bother with e-mails any more. Nobody bothers to answer! I would be arrested if I had taken up all of the pharmaceutical offers I had had, either for gross enlargement or enlivenment. Attachments are removed, or too large to send, or receive without filling the allotted mailbox, and if I used outlook in preview mode I would have been dismissed from work for some of the image content.

I find that a web site and instant messenger, and sometimes a telephone is all I need. Small files can be directly transferred by messenger. I zip bigger files or folders. Upload the zipfile, contact the recipient with the file name, and all they need is to browse the address I give them. Once I get confirmation that they have received the file, and I can delete it from the site. 30-50Mb transfers are no problem. If you are paranoid, you can encrypt the file before zipping it.
