I have brought up a new server on Exchange 2000, migrated mailboxes, have mail working on the new server and have turned off inbound/outbound mail on the old server.

I am not trying to figure out what I need to do, in order to permanently turn off the 5.5 server. All mailboxes show they are pointing to the new server and when the old server is off, mail works fine.

What do I need to do in order to remove the 5.5 server from the picture completely. I have been searching but have not seen a clean set of steps to decommission the old server?

This isnt really an answer for you, but another question since it appears youve been thru the process. I will be bringing up a new Exchange 2003 server alongside my Exchange 5.5 box, and migrating only 5-10 mailboxes per week to ensure the new server is stable and running correctly. In the meantime, how will the 2 servers communicate to each other to know when a mailbox resides on the Exchange 2003 server, and no longer on the Exchange 5.5 box? Is this something they will establish automatically when I add the E2K3 box to the same site as the 5.5?
