Dead USB Port

I've had my PC for 2 years but have never had anything to connect to its 2 USB ports until recently when I got myself a Compaq iPAQ.

However, I can't get my iPAQ to sync via USB on either of the 2 ports (it works fine via serial port). When I go to device manager it says that there is an error with the USB root hub - "The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (code2)".

I have tried updating the driver, but it says that the best driver is already installed on my PC.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can sort out this problem?

Could you tell us a little bit about your system such as Operating System, other peripherals, hardware, etc.

Since you have already synced the iPAQ with the serial port is there a setting in the program that may need to be changed to allow synchronization with the USB port?

If you had the iPAQ attached to your computer's serial port when you installed the software it may not have loaded the USB software. Try uninstalling the iPAQ software and reinstalling with the iPAQ attached to the USB port. Many USB peripherals have their own USB driver software to load.

Hope this helps! ggebhart@clover.net

I have since remembered that my USB did once work.... When I first got my PC it came with a mouse that connected via USB, but after a few months it stopped working so I switched to another mouse I had - which wasn't USB. I just assumed that the mouse had died, not the USB port which now appears to be the case.

You are right - there are additional settings on the iPAQ which can be changed to connect via USB - I have already tried changing them, as well as deleting the partnership and reinstalling it. I haven't tried uninstalling the activesync software though - I'll try that later this week.

I'm using Windows 98 - the only peripherals or hardware I have are an Epson printer, TFT monitor and digital camera (when connected) - nothing that I would have thought would conflict.

If you are comfortable entering your systems bios you may want to check to see if the usb ports are indeed enabled. It may turn out to be a simple fix.
But please! only enter the bios if you are familiar with the different settings. Just like the windows registry...one wrong setting and your left with a big box with some pretty lights.
Good luck

Think I am better off leaving the bios well alone. I'd rather have a working PC with no USB than a box with pretty lights!!

Thanks anyway

You can check for conflicts in device manager, just in case you haven't done this already you can get there by:

right clicking on my computer
properties
device manager

If you want to see what device is on each irq:

double click on computer

Oh and if you did have a mouse on the usb at one time and did not uninstall the usb drivers you may have a conflict on that usb port.

Look in add/remove programs in the control panel for that mouse device and uninstall it.

start
settings
control panel
add/remove programs

Just some things for you to try....[morning] ggebhart@clover.net

Thanks for this, but it hasn't cured the problem. I've been told that the reason I get the NTKERN.VXD error is because there are some files missing on Win98 SE which are only on the Win 98 disc.

I haven't been able to get hold of a copy of this, and the microsoft website just advices me to delete 2 lines of code from my autoexec.bat file. However, this file is empty on my PC.....

Does anyone have the relevant files from Win 98 they could give me a URL to download from? I believe the ones I need are:

WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/UHCD.SYS
WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/USBD.SYS
WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/USBHUB.SYS

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Cheers
