I gotta question for somebody. Is it just Rambus that you have to intall 2 chips? Or does that apply to DDR as well?

I haven't gotten a chance to sink my teeth into the new stuff yet. I just keep getting the good old PC133 stuff.

Also, would the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP (w/ all the options) be a better value, yet, just as good a performer as the Asus A7V333 and the Soyo KT Dragon Ultra? These would be based with 524 DDR 2700, XP1900+. What would be a power supply recommendation? All of this is based on a fairly tight budget and the power supply would be w/ a case. So budget minded answers are preferable. Jay [atom]

You can just use a single stick of DDR - I do.

As for the mobo's, while I am a huge fan of Gigabyte boards (i'm using the GA-7VTXE at the mo), the ASUS board will run faster with DDR memory, especially DDR 2700.

Power supply? probably a 350/400W. a 300 might do, but swing for the 350 to be safe.

Anyway you ook at it though, that thing'll smoke.....

Have fun....

Just my .002 cents...

I have a Dragon. If I were you, I wouldn't skimp on the memory or the power supply. You can run 1 stick of RAM, but make sure it's quality - I like Crucial for compatibility and stability. Maybe look at Corsair or Mushkin for more performance. Also, make sure you get a good power supply - at least 350W. Pick a name brand like Enermax - don't get one that comes with a case. It will pay off in lack of headaches...

I know this is on a budget, so maybe go with a 1800+ instead of 1900+ or a little less memory so that you can get good quality components. I know that's disappointing, but it'll save you headaches - and I went from an A7V (1Ghz) to the Dragon with DDR (same processor) and that alone sped me up!!! You can also put in more memory next month...

Can a board like the A7V333 use the full capability of PC3000 or higher as featured at the following web address?

Thanks for the keen ideas psychosylph, I found I can afford some really good stuff from AICMicro.com and still get some high-end memory from corsair. Good lookin' out! I get dense when it comes to budget vs performance sometimes.[dazed]

Don't feel bad - I need a new video card and it sure is hard convincing myself not to buy a GF4 Ti4600...

As for that memory, supposedly that board can use it to it's potential but you will have to overclock to use it. Keep in mind that PC2100 is equal to a 133 FSB (what the XP runs at naturally); PC2700 is equal to a 166 (?) FSB and PC3000 is equal to 200 (?) FSB. So it's good if you're going to overclock, not so much if you aren't (read: waste of money).

Of course, you can run your processor and memory asynchronously (different FSBs) if you have memory that fast but I've never read of anyone getting worthwhile results from that; more often they wind up with strange things happening...

Just my .002 cents...
