DDE function from FPW26 fails with Word 2003

I have an old application in FPW26 where the user starts a Word document from a button. The document is filled with data from the FPW record. This has worked fine for many years until the client upgraded their Office software from 97 to 2003. The action now fails with a runtime 509 error. Sometimes, the document does appear after various error messages but the data fields in the document are not updated from the FPW record. I am on the very edge of (if not past!) my technical expertise on this matter so any help, preferably in words of one syllable!, would be much appreciated.

How about converting the necessary data to an Excel file (COPY TO <file> TYPE XLS) before calling Word?

I would think that Word would have an easier time reading an old Excel file than an old FoxPro file, but I could be wrong. (I do not have Office 2003 to test this.)
