I did a DCPromo to wipe AD off the server... and then DCPromo to reinstate it.

Everything went fine except I rebooted the machine as it asked me and it is STILL "applying computer settings" This was about 30 min. ago...

How long does this things take?

Am I hung up possibly?

thanks

32 minutes it took to boot...

Now logon has taken about 5 and counting...

DOH!

=)

If your server is still taking a long time to reboot then the next time you get it fully up try doing the following

1. DCPromo Ad
2. Restart the server
3. Once restarted clean it up
4. Restart again (if taken a long time - let us know)
5. Run Configure your server and install AD using the wizard

There is not much else you can do your Ad went in wrong and its hanging.

Ok, it did FINALLY manage to boot... but the thing is, I go into DNS and all my settings are still in there? Nothing has changed? All my DNS forwarders are still there etc...

Does this mean that dcpromo did not work?

rphips... should I try the dcpromo ad still?? and what exactly does that do different than normal dcpromo?

I will await your answer before proceeding...

Thanks a ton!

The DNS settings will stay because that the DNS is a seperate component that has connectors to the AD so thatts OK.

Yes there seems to be a difference in windows 2000, don't ask me why (A Microsoft thing) but everytime I have used it I've had to reload using the configure your server utility.

Once you reloaded check your DNS again - It should reconnect if not delete it and rebuild your DNS

I know what your going through and believe me it easier and faster to rebuild it. I ve done it to many times.

Ok, before I get confused...

Exactly what should I do right now?

Do the "dcpromo ad" in run, and when that is done, if it is not fixed try removing my DNS and re-initializing it?

Would it be beneficial for me to just try and uninstall DNS and re-install it? Or go the "dcpromo ad" way first?

Thanks

I am a newbie so step by steps help... hehe

1 DCPromo Ad (Remove)
2. Restart the server
3. Once restarted clean it up
4. Restart again (if taken a long time - let us know)
5. Run Configure your server and install AD using the wizard
6. Leave the DNS Alone
7. Add a user and check out your DNS settings.
8. If and this is a big if you get DNS errors Delete the DNS and rebuild it.

Your ready to rock and roll

"DCPromo ad" didn't work...

This is a server 2003 box so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it?

Also... what do you mean by "clean it up"?

Also where do I find the "Run Configure your server and install AD using the wizard" <-- I usually just use dcpromo?

thanks for the help man!
Chance~

Sorry OverDrive,
I thought it was a 2000 box since we are in a 2000 forum.

I am just now getting into 2003 and my experience is way low.

But I will asked some others with more experience and get back to you.
