Hi,

I'm going about Demoting all DC Servers so all I have is one main PDC Server.

I've done 2 of the 3 but I can't get the third one to demote to a Member Server.

I run DCPRomo from command prompt and type in the correct password twice. It says starting, with the little book being erased and then this comes up:-

The operation failed because:

Managing the network session with 2000server.ABC.CO.UK failed

"The remote computer is not available. "

I've read some of the posts on here and the 2000server has all the FSMO's pointing to it.

There is no Global Directory on the server I'm trying to demote either.

I've also checked and re-checked the TCP/IP Settings to make sure the DNS is pointing the right direction.

Now I'm stuck.

Do I need to run DCPROMO /forceremoval

If I do, what do I need to do after this has completed?

Thanks everyone,

Simon

Which server has dns on it? You should put the DNS on the pdc. Does the root server (pdc) have the global catalog?
After DCPROMO /forceremoval you should do a metadata cleanup.

Correction

After DCPROMO /forceremoval you may need to do a metadata cleanup

WARNING

[b}Use metadata cleanup ONLY if you are removing a NON EXISTING domain [/b]

You do not want to erase your existing domain.....
