Date Picker Control

I have used the date picker control to allow users to select a date and then have the date stored in a table. The problem that I have is that when the user clicks on the date it does not populate the field until the user clicks on another field. Is there any way that the field can be updated on click of selecting the date?
I assume that a VB command will be the answer, but I am a novice in this area and any help would be greatly appreciated.
