How long does/should it take to shrink a database from approximately 3.5GB to 2.5GB that has a log file over 9GB? (It was originally set to autogrow with no size limit.) I have changed that setting, but do I also need to explicitly modify the size of the logfile, or will that be handled during the shrink process?
Thanks,
Gladys

Hi Gladys,

All data and log files for the specific database will be shrunk when you use SHRINK DATABASE. For an explanation on how much space you should expect to be re-allocated, refer to FoxDev's comments in the following threads, he's also written a FAQ on the topic:

Transaction Log Shrinking
thread183-10180

Massive Transaction Log
thread183-42617

AFA how long it should take: Not too long, depending on your server specs, but more than a few minutes. If I were you, I would set it to shrink while I went to lunch or overnight. Jon Hawkins

Thanks. I printed out FoxDev's instructions.

The gist of the FAQ that is relevant is that the log file won't shrink until the active portion of the log wraps around from the end; the time for this to occur wouldn't necessarily be measured in minutes/hours/days, but in how much transactional activity (inserts/updates/deletes) is occuring.
