Database protection job in R12 1

Hi,

I've been doing some test runs with R12. The first install we did was as a stand alone server. I don't recall seeing any problems. We needed to rebuild our server and I did an install of the master server. The database protection job failed because there was no media for it. What does this job do? I'm backing up the db as part of the job. Do I need to run this built-in task? Setting aside media shouldn't be a problem. We are using FSD as our media. I can created directories on the USB drives that can be used for the media pool. Is it sensible for the same USB disk to hold the backup job and whatever it is that gets created to "protect" the database?

With all former ARCserve versions the option 'backup ARCserve database files' could be set in order to protect the VLDB database. As from r12 the VLDB is replaced with an SQL2005 Express version. The database protection job is automatically created to protect the Master Database. It is sensible to put this backup data on a separate media (disk or tape)

When I run my job I can select options and then have it include "CA ARCserve Backup Database". There is also an option to include this when I expand the hostname where the server runs. It's included with C:, System State, etc. Is the database protection job another mechanism to save the same data or does it do something different?

I have the exact same query actually. When we backup our server, we've already selected "CA ARCServe Backup Database" so do we really need the database protection job also? And if so, what's the difference between the 2 ?

different paths to the same destination

the one gives the ability to have the database on a specific tape. some users find this handy because in this way they keep a history of the database. figure the db is pruned so records for old tapes kept in storage are gone from the db. this way they can restore the db as it was in Jan. for example.
