I have Database Maintenance Plan that is schedulled to backup all databases everynight. However It only backus up the default databased that come with SQL like the Northwind database etc. I would guess this is some type of permisions issue. The SQL server agent is set to log in with the sa login and password. any sugestions ?

Does it mention anything in the windows log or sql server log about any errors when backing up the databases? You might try looking there and post what you find.

I assume that you have checked, double checked, and triple checked that the backup plan does have all the databases you want to back up.

You could also check to see if admin privages are the problem by logging in as local admin on the machine and running the backup job and see if it fails or not. If not than yes you have a security issue. If fails than the problem is else where.

Maybe a path or something.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the sugestion jitter
The server log gives a Warning with event ID 208 included below

SQL Server Scheduled Job 'DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'DB Maintenance Plan1'' (0xED957A9E103E784E8E6B3B57A019752D) - Status: Failed - Invoked on: 2005-03-07 02:00:00 - Message: The job failed. The Job was invoked by Schedule 1 (Schedule 1). The last step to run was step 1 (Step 1).

The previous events on the log are confirmations of the databases that where backedup. All the databases are scheduled to back up in the same direcroty and I can do manual backups. FYI its SQL 2000

Here is a link that may help.

You may also want to check the following.

Go into the SQL enterprise manager and then check the history for the job to see why it failed.

A couple of things to try.

Do you have a licensed version of SQL Server or are you using the Evaluation Edition? If you are using the evaluation edition, there are things that you can only do with the 'built-in' databases such as NorthWind. I believe backing up databases is one of the things you can't do with the evaluation copy.

jitter,

I looked in the maintenance history log and saw that the databases that where not backing up where failing the integrity checks with a message that said they needed to be in single user mode. I unchecked the maintenance option that said check integrity before backup and the Backups succeeded. Thanks for you help I would not have been able to solve this with out checking the maintenance history logs.

This is odd. I've seen the DBMP fail an integrity check before but still backup the database. And this is without being in Single User Mode.

You might want to run some DBCC commands against your DB and make sure there isn't something else going on in the background that you're unaware of.
