Database in network

hi,

i have created a database and placed it on a computer in a network. i try to open the database from another computer in the network and access the data and i get a "read only, you cannot modify-add" message. The database on the 1st computer was not open. I have checked the attributes of the db and its not a read only file.

How can i have the database accessible to modify from all the computers in the network? Is it possible to have it open from more than 1 computer?will it crash if two people from different computers try to save the same record?
please help .. i m lost

Not enough information to specifically address your problem. You'll have to look at security settings and make sure you have read/write permission on database from other computers. It is under Tools - Security - User and Group Permissions. This may not be the only thing, but it is a good place to start.

Pls post, Windows ver on both, Access Version on both.

hmm ..

the db was created on a win98 office 2000, one of the computers in the network is win2k office 2000 and the other one office and winXP,

all permissions in Tools - Security - User and Group Permissions are ticked.


what are the steps - when you finish a db - to make it work simultaneously in different computers?

Andy,

When the user opens Access, they are doing many things.
They write to the Access file; MRU, any preferences set,
file's last modification date, etc. They also create a
.ldb file for Access to use to show who's using the
database.

The users need full permissions on the location of the
Access database.

All permissions of the db file which is place on one computer in the network (in Tools - Security - User and Group Permissions) are ticked and still i get the error i described in the first post - that the db is read-only. When i open the db from the computer it is on, it is ok.

Hi

The User needs Read/Write/Create/delete permissions in the directory where the Access mdb file is located, these are Network permissions, not Access permissions.

Ok .. here i am again,

Have done as been told BUT...
when both users have a form open ... (eg. form students - current record id: 53 - 1st user press "add new record" --> 54, the other user presses "add new record" -->55)
only the user who works on the computer where the database is allowed to save a record. The other user gets an error message. But unfortunately the problem does not stop here .. all records that were saved by the user who is working on the computer which has the database -while both users were using the form - are lost.

what Record Locking do you have set,

which version of Access are you using, and are you using Page or Row level locking

what if any error trapping do you have for locked record

what is the eror message

I have just found out about Record Locking and i m changing it to "Edited Record"

I m not using any Page or Row level locking

Access XP on 1 computer and Access 2000 on the other

The error message is "Cant go to the specified record"

Once you get this working make sure you check out this thread for your 2000 machine as it will lock up with the others on data entry. Read the Aug 31 info

ImplicitCommitSync should be set to yes
UserCommitSync should be set to yes

What I was trying to say is that you will get people really locking each other all the time when using computers with 2000 on them unless you do the registry changes mentioned above. We were running 98 and 2000 machines and had it and then with all 2000 machines it got worse. MIcrosoft reviewed our db and then came after weeks suggest what is noted in the thread.

We no longer lock each other every time we try to do data entry.

You said you "changed it back to no locks and waiting to see what happens".

Shall i change the Record Locking to "Edited Record" AND the registry? or only the regisrty?
What did u do?

I would do the registry change and then after it works you could try edited locks or whatever works best for you. Ours are no locks and we have not had a problem since the registry change.

I don't know about the user accounts

I have a shared database on a winxp machine. A win2K pc has access to the database. While everything was working ok for 2 years now, recently there is a problem. The win2K cannot open the database file. There is an error message saying that the path or filename is incorect. When i change the filename of the database on the winxp machine it is working ok for a while (hours.. maybe days) and then the problem appears again.
I have made all registry changes

Software/Microsoft/Jet/4.0/Engines/Jet 4.0
ImplicitCommitSync should be set to yes
UserCommitSync should be set to yes

I cannot think of any other solution. Can you?
