data access page

Hi all --

I have created some data access pages intended to be used for viewing (not editing) information over my web server.

Everything is working fine, but the pages require a plugin for IE. I would rather this not be the case, b/c those that would view the pages often may not view them from the same computer twice, and it would be annoying to have to take 10 miutes to install the plugin every time they wanted to check the inventory.

I am trying to strip the page down so that it doesn't use any of the fancy Access features (i.e., editing, record navigation, etc.) to see if I can get by without the plugin. Then I play around with the source code for the data access page to try to get it not to look for the plugin.

It's not working, and basically I don't know what I'm doing trying to edit the source code of the htm files. Thoughts?

A plugin? Are you using IE version => 6? DAP's won't work below this or in Netscape. Do you have any other apps embedded such as Flash? Which version of Access are you using 2000 or 2002? If they're just for displaying data, it should work. Access is just adding HTML and XML.

I am using IE v6.0. The message the browser displays is "This Page Requires Microsoft Office Web Components" then offers a link to go get it. I am using Access 2002. There are no other embedded apps.

Look at one more thing. Go into VBA (ALT+F11), click on Tools, References and see if Microsoft Internet Controls is checked. If not check it and see if that helped.

First, I made a mistake. DAP works in IE => version 5.
It seems something, that library, wasn't loaded when something was installed. Maybe someone else out here knows. Have you tried it out on other computers - not around your office, but a totally physically separate computer? 'Cause if yours has an incomplete load, so will your office mates.

Actually, it works on my box. I guess Office Web Components was installed when I installed Access.

However, anyone who does not have Access seems to need to download the Microsoft Web Components in order to get it to work.

Sorry that I was unclear on this.

i discovered that the tool comes with office xp. so anyone who is running an older version of office needs the download. maybe that information will jog some thoughts?

Microsoft limits adding and updating records through data access pages to those who have a valid license for Access - at least that's the way it was a couple of years ago. So they use the web components and MDAC as a way to limit that. Used to be before access XP the link to the components could be embedded and automatically downloaded to the host, but I understand that XP elimnated that option. If you have a lot of interaction required by your users you may want to go ASP.
