My monitor can display 1152x864@80Hz but winxp only lets me choose between 60, 72 ,75, 85, 100 or 120Hz. Is there a way to make 80hz appear? I know it does work @ 80hz because i have used a 3rd party program to change the refresh rate (but it did not make it appear in windows display settings). But i would prefere it if i could do it without installing any 3rd party programs. I have the latest drivers for the monitor.

Doesn't your graphics card driver include additional tabs integrated into display properties hich allow custom refresh rates (my matrox does, but I know many, particularly basic cards do not). Otherwise I think you'll need (other) third party software for this (eg, Powerstrip from - shareware, but works with a nag)

Does your graphics card driver not add tabs to display properties to enable custome refresh rates (my Matrox card does - but I know some types just supply drivers)? If it doesn't, I suggest you will need (other) third party software (eg Powerstrip from

my graphics card does not have tabs to have a custom refresh rate. I do not wish to use Powerstrip because you have to load it everytime i want to change the resolution to 80Hz. A program that did not have to be loaded at startup would be ok.
I have seen people making monitor .inf files (for any monitor) which makes it so you can have a custom refresh rate. I have seen a file which forces 85Hz at but there is not an 80Hz file
Can anyone make me one of these files?

Ciaran - how often do you change it to 80Hz? If you want that as your default, you can just use powerstrip to set it. That will remain setting till you change it - doesn't need powerstrip loaded. Unless you're changing refresh rate every 5 minutes, that's a reasonable solution.

From that page you supplied, if you look at the 70 & 85hz .inf files, I think you would be able to produce yourself an 80hz version (hint, replace occurrencies of 85 with 80). If I were you I'd try out the 70 to see if it works for you first (I must admit I thought 2k & XP had got rid of .inf files for monitors, thought they were win9x only. But now see they are still there, have you also thought of editing the .inf file you have for your monitor?)

I have found a solution to the problem.
I installed nvidia's latest drivers then used a program called NV refresh tool to set the refresh rate to 80Hz ( you could only do it if you had the latest drivers). I did not like using powestrip because it was shareware.
I did change all the references in the .inf file from 85 to 80 but it still did not work.
