I have installed Win2K many times and have not had the option to do a custom installation to choose which accessories etc I wish to install.
This question was sparked because of markdeserio's "Uninstalling acessories" post below.

Anybody know of a way to choose which components are installed during a clean installation of Windows 2000?

Thanks in advance,

-Brett

It suggests an answer for markdeserio's "Uninstalling acessories" post and also how to make the choice available diring install.

Actually you can customize a W2K installation through the use of an answer file. The instructions are in a document called the "Microsoft Windows 2000 Guide to Unattended Setup: Answer file parameters for unattended installation of the Windows2000 Family of Operating Systems". This doc is found in Support\Tools\Deploy.cab on the W2k installation CD. An example would be that you can customize the components installed by creating a section in your answer file like this:

[Components]
accessopt = off
deskpaper = off
freecell = off
minesweeper = off
mswordpad = off
pinball = off
solitaire = off

All of the above "components" of w2k do not install. The above-referenced .doc gives the user details of the default settings for each parameter, and what each parameter is associated with. You can create an answer file with the Setup Manager "wizard" also found in deploy.cab with an installation you have already configured. An unattend.txt file will be created. You can then edit the unattend.txt file to include all or part of the above. Then, if you rename this answer file winnt.sif and put it on a floppy, you can automate the installation of w2k in conjunction with the use of the bootable cd. The w2k cd always looks for the winnt.sif file in the FD before it begins installation. Another great Microsoft source that will give you more information on some of the vast "possibilities" with W2K, is a document on Technet called "Deploying Microsoft Windoes 2000 Professional and Microsoft Office 2000 Using Sysprep".

Good luck.

Thank you all for your helpfull replies.
I did check out the KB article "Q223182" and found it quite good. Thanks "french01".
I was aware of the unattended setup routine information that clientadmin posted - but always helpfull for others reading the posts in this thread. Thanks "clientadmin".
The answer to my question was made by "custom install" who said simply "No", there is no custom installation for Windows 2000 as there is with Win9X.
Another learning experience for me - thanks again.
