Css puts dash marks in whY?

ok i've been using css styles to work the backgrounds of my templates.
the problem is that when i preview them in the browser there is dash marks wherever i have used a css style for a background.
how do i get rid of it? or should i just paste images instead?
< but that creates some problems too like small images that are supose to duplicate and cover a whole section
