Crystal XI bar charts showing up as random solid colors

I have a requirement where my bar charts are to be in black and white and the bars should never be solid. All bars should be as patterns.

In the designer, I can see 3 bars and I set them to be patterns, but when I run the report and more bars appear (because of the data), those new bars are solid and colored.

How can I set the chart so that ALL bars that appear show up as a black & white patterns?

I can't believe no one has run into this problem.
