My question is: Can you take a field or a total from a cross tab and use it in a normal formula?

You shouldn't really need to... you should be able to generate that field without using the crosstab.

Of course, it may be more convenient to use the crosstab field, but I do not know whether that is possible... I doubt it, but would love to be wrong.
