I mostly work on my PC laptop, but occassionally I access the 'Net. When I do, I get this Critical Windows Update message. Every time I try to comply, I only get the Admistrators message. I never get to the screen where my hard drive is scanned for needed Windows updates. Oddly enough, when I go to the Office Family tab, my computer is scanned for Office updates and am told to download the new service pack.

What's the deal here? Don't I need any updates for my Win98SE?

Thanks.

Daniel

I don't know if this will cure it, but search the windows dir for a file extension called pwl. Its the file that holds your logon password. Rename it.

Restart the laptop, you maybe asked to enter a password, if you do, then in the future you need to put this password in, pressing cancel or enter without a password limits what windows will do.

If this doesn't help, you can go to the download center on microsoft.com and manually download the files. Just get ones with 'critical update' rather than general updates.

Thanks, Tez.

When I go to the Windows Update site, I see the Welcome, Get Help and Support, and About Windows Update buttons. The other buttons are grayed out.

Another odd thing about the Critical Updates in general is that the message does not always show when I get onto the web. Maybe only every third or fourth time.

Maybe this helps.

Try clearing out all your internet files / cookies / history etc incase thats causing the problem.

There's no logical reason why a webform button should be greyed out. I have never seen it!!

I know deepdown this won't work.... but what happens next time you start w98, and change the name to administrator and then log into windows, then go to the web?

I take it that you get the 'Administrators only' message.
I have had this problem for months without any good advice on a fix. I did eventually resolve the issue though.
If you go to windows update, select 'get help and support' goto 'windows update troubleshooter'. Read 'manual Installation instructions for windows update controls'.
It gives you links to download the following.

Win98/ME

XP/2K

Unzip to a folder and rightclick on the .inf file and install. If you get any warnings about overwriting files, overwrite them.

Hey presto!!

Thanks, Sophic. I will try this. I am so sick of getting the message, I have been just hitting the Notify Me Later button.

Thanks again!
