Can someone please document how to create checkboxes in FileMaker Pro 5 on a MAC?

Attached a value list to your field.
Put the field on the layout.
Goto field format - checkbox - valuelist.

Is there a way to create a True Check Box?

A box where is clicked on, an X appears (on/off) in the field, without the need of creating a value list?

No and yes.
Just use a value list with nothing in it.

But why you want that ??
