Scenario:

We currently have 2 Windows 2000 File Servers hosting a large number of shares, we have purchased a Compaq NAS1000 unit to enable us to consolidae some of the data currently stored on the file servers.

Problem:

Quit a lot of the data is spreadsheets and db's, which have macros and cross references to other files which have been setup using UNC path names, i.e. 1 of the servers is called Terra, with a share called Data, users have referenced \\terra\data, when we relocate the data to the NAS box, which is called NAS1000, the UNC is obviously no longer valid, if we were only moving the data from 1 file server, I would rename the NAS box to Terra, and problem solved, however, we are moving data from at least 2 and possibly a 3rd. So what we want to be able to do is to create an alias name on teh NAS box, so that users can still map drives to \\terra\data as well as \\nas1000\data.

Tried So Far:

Tried creating an additional A Record entry in the Active Directory Integrated DNS for the Alias hostname of Terra, tried creating a Static entry in WINS for AAlias hostname of Terra, have also tried using a good old Hosts file entry, none of these worked, they all returned the following error when attempting to map a drive:

"System error 52:

You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the Network. Go to system in control panel to change the computer name and try again."

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
