Creating a Server with a Dynamic IP

I have Server 2000 that I want to install at home using a Cable Modem (Dynamic IP) can I access the Server from another location (externally) if the home IP occassionally changes? My intention is to create a server that can be used to install Exchange Server...

There are numerous free services that provide DDNS (Dynamic DNS) for computers that have dynamic IPs. I've used no-ip.com in the past and it has worked great. For free, you can "register" a name like faulk.no-ip.com that will resolve to your dynamically assigned IP by loading a program that updates their DNS server whenever your IP changes.

They also have some different pay services for added features.

That addresses your IP problem. I'm not too sure how Exchange will like that. I haven't played with it too much. Maybe someone else can help us with that...?

The answer is two part:

1. Yes you can access the server externally provided you know what the ip address is changed too.

2. As for the Exchange part, the MX records in the ISP's DNS will need to be updated everytime your IP changes. Doubtfull that the Cable ISP will do that....so I would say no, Exchange will not funtion properly with a dynamic ip. See if the Cable company will sell you a Static ip....
